Well, as i foretold heres another little snippet of my summer! As a Marianas Trench fan since Skin and Bones and shake tramp, i had a minor freak attack when i fond out that they would be playing in halifax and that not only could i go, but this would be what i consider my first real concert (i don’t usually count small local shows because i’ve been to a lot) In short, the concert was them along with Carly Rae Jepsen and it was nothing short of amazing. To top it off i spent the night afterwards hanging out with josh Ramsay(lead singer) and Ian Casselman (drummer) and the entirety of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Band (except Carly) in downtown Halifax after spotting them across the street and saying a friendly hello. Easily one of the best nights of my summer, and completely unforgettable.

So here it is, the song i have been addicted to and cant get enough of ever since:

Desperate Measures-Marianas Trench

Enjoy!

4 months, whoa

So this summer has kind of flown by fast, really nauseatingly fast. Apologies for my drop off the face of the earth but to be fair i had a full time job and a life to balance. Not to mention some experiences that made this summer a once in a life time kind of thing. I even started learning a language, so trust me, i’ve been busy!

After a while you learn… → goodmorningandgoodnight.com

“After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul, and you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning and company doesn’t mean security, and you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts and presents aren’t promises, and you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child, and you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans. After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much. So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure… that you really are strong, and you really do have worth.” ~Veronica A. Shoffstall

theres nothing like it.

I love photography and as much as I love the convenience of digital photography and being able to see the picture right away to decide if it is necessary to take another,I still have to say that film photography will always have my heart.

Theres something about it that digital cameras just don’t have, and using film makes you so much more selective and careful of the photos you are taking rather than the point and shoot mentality that most have of digital photography, with film there is an art to it.One of my favourite things about it though is the way pictures look, they may not be extremely crisp and clear such as digital photographs but they have an amazing look that nothing else can capture quite the same way.Well after my little rant, heres the photos I took the other day wandering around with my Dad’s Canon AE-1. Enjoy :)

No Fracking way → ecologyaction.ca

It has recently been brought to my attention the issue of Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) after watching the documentary Gasland; which I would like to add that although informative on the general issue of what fracking is, is seen as a biased view of the subject. Fracking is a way that the oil companies remove natural gas from the earth. In this process they use chemicals that are known carcinogens and are known to be health risks to humans if brought in contact with them and especially if ingested. They shoot these chemicals into the ground to break apart shale to get at the natural gas. The real problem though is what happens to these chemicals. They have been known to seep into the ground further and to contaminate water supplies of entire communities. This practice is taking place all over the United States right now and the terrifying part is that these companies are exempt from the clean water and air acts! Though it has been happening in the United States as well as in Canada for a while, Canada has much stricter policies to protect citizens.

Upon hearing that Fracking was going to begin in my province, close to where I live it made me really upset. Although the companies here must test the water before, during, and after the drilling and fracking  it still does not solve the fact that they have no safe solution for the earth or the public as to what they will do with the toxic and radio active fluid after. Perhaps put it in our rivers? or spray it into the air we breathe to evaporate? This is not something I want for my province, country, continent, or world for that matter. Apologies for the rant, but this is a cause that is close to my heart, and home, and affects many other people in the process…maybe even you.

for more information on Hydraulic Fracturing check out the ecology action centres pdf information page by clicking on the post title or the link below.

For today I decided to post an old favorite. I used to love this song, but as many others do, it was swept away after a few new songs came out. I recently stumbled upon it the other day and a bit of nostalgia hit me. Hope you enjoy it :)

the newsroom

It seems like it was just the other day that I was introducing myself and announcing a close to my first year at king’s, and now BAM! I’m back to king’s on the 5th for another year of studying, adventures, and I’m sure there will be a fair amount of crazy in there too, after all there seemed to be last year. As excited as I am to be going back to Halifax I am sad to say that summer is over. I haven’t posted many of my adventures from this summer but maybe I will have to revive blast from the past and relive them later this year because some of them are a bit crazy and good for a laugh. Although I do feel like my pictures tell their own story of my summer. One of my favourite adventures of the summer was my time in the news room at The News.

Today I am sad to say is my last day at The News, and I will honestly miss being in the newsroom with the great journalists that I have job shadowed and written stories for over the last month. Before I started here I always though that I had a pretty good idea of what a news room was like and how it worked, but this experience has taught me so much more. Over the course of a month I have learned how to interview people over the phone more easily and efficiently, I have learned the benefits of bouncing story ideas off of co-workers, and I have learned that in a small town gossip is worth a lot.  Oh, and my last tip i received, always wear a skirt to construction site interview or pictures hahaha. Overall it’s been an amazing month and i will be sad to leave The News.

flying time

okay, wow. so it’s been a month since I’ve posted last, and i would love to tell you that I took that time to vacation but that didn’t happen sadly. Just the opposite actually! I have been insanely no-time-to-do-anything busy for the past month. Between working and my internship i have had only a couple of days off for the last month :( but I do have a lot to show for it!

number one: my first legitimate newspaper published article! (I’ve had an article published in a small local publication before)

http://www.ngnews.ca/News/Local/2011-08-21/article-2717953/Lifeguards-quick-response-saves-man-at-mall/1

my first legitimate article was followed by a few front page pictures and my number two awesome thing: first front page article! (front page picture that day too)

http://www.ngnews.ca/News/Local/2011-08-26/article-2729230/People-keeping-eye-out-for-how-storm-develops/1

well thats just a little update of what i’ve been up to, enjoy whats left of summer!! :)
